Historically, the New England clambake was prepared in a deep hole dug into the sand. Large rocks were heated with burning driftwood, the heated rocks covered with seaweed, seafood and vegetables tucked inside and finally covered over with a tarp and sand to slowly steam for hours. We have a better idea!
